A Four Part Series, Beginning Today

Prelude—Four Examples of the Target—May 5, 2021
Part 1: The End of Transactional Religion—May 12, 2021
Part 2: The End of Transactional Relationships—May 19, 2021

We now have an archery range in the woods beside our house.  After I set up a couple of targets, I shot 8 arrows with my 50# recurve bow and hit the target 2X.  Why is it important to have a target?

Obviously, you have to be able to see your target, whether the target and the seeing are literal or metaphorical.

“Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters,
And you who have no money, come buy and eat.
Come, buy wine and milk and wine
Without money and Without price.

Isaiah 55:1

Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

Acts 2:43-45

“If today O’Shay and Finnian were working Murphy’s land,
then tomorrow, or the day after, he would be working theirs.
No one would have to ask.
The tractor or two good hands and a strong back would simply come,
And the work would be done.
The people around here are a world unto themselves.
Offering to give, to lend, to share everything,
Themselves included  is second nature.
And that’s all there is to it.

Irish Culture (Nora Roberts, Born In Fire)

After delighting the African children by taking their photos
And showing them the images of themselves on his camera,
The American photographer asked them to run a race (for a prize).
At the end of the race, as all the children were sharing the prize, the American asked,
Why didn’t the winner did keep the prize for himself?
“Ubuntu! Ubuntu! Ubuntu!” the children shouted gleefully.
“We are one!”

When it comes to putting an end to the transactional (tit-for-tat) world, what are we aiming at?  Let me give you four targets, keeping in mind, please, these four are simply examples of what a non-transactional world looks like.

There is so much more to be said about the meaning of, The End of the Transactional World and the four suggestive targets. Stay tuned for the next three weeks.  Right now, ask yourself, “Why does this matter?  What is at stake?  What changes as we take a step towards an end to…

Transactional Religion?
Transactional Relationships?
Transactional Economics?
