A Devotional Word for Followers of Jesus, From Oswald Chambers, Through Me, To You: January 31, 2021

Spread the love

On January 31, each and every year, Oswald Chambers, in his devotional classic, My Utmost For His Highest, confronts his readers with a very difficult message.  He asks us to get real, to know Reality.  He keeps capitalizing the word Reality.  Chambers uses the word “Reality” in the same sense as theologian Paul Tillich uses the phrase, “Ultimate Reality.”  God is Reality itself.  God is what is most real. God’s primary concern is “Reality,” meaning everything.  “For God so loved the world…”

What is most real, according to Chambers, is not our personal holiness, well-being or eternal destiny in heaven.  Listen:

The one thing that is all important is that the Gospel of God should be realized as the abiding Reality.  (Ken’s note—what is that Gospel, the abiding Reality?  Suggestion–Just Love!) Reality is not human goodness, nor holiness, nor heaven, nor hell, but Redemption.

What is Redemption?  That God’s intention, God’s purpose in making a world, the Reality of Just Love being filling the entire creation, in and through everything, in and through all time and space.  The Whole World.  All of Reality.  No one is to, or can, pursue personal holiness, personal redemption, while neglecting the Whole.  To neglect the Whole, Reality, is to identify self as God.  Idolatry.

What is our Ultimate Concern to be?  The same as God’s concern.  Everything, Reality, throughout time and space.  Just Love.
