May 26: Pray without ceasing. (I Thess. 5:17)
“Jesus never mentioned unanswered prayer. He had the boundless certainty that prayer is always answered. Have we by the Spirit the unspeakable certainty that Jesus had about prayer, or do we think of the times when God does not seem to have answered prayer? ‘Everyone that asketh receiveth.’ We say—‘But…but…’ God answers prayer in the best way, not sometimes, but every time, although the immediate manifestation of the answer in the domain in which we want it may not always follow. Do we expect God to answer prayer? (OC)
Friends, I have been aware for many years, and have tried to share with others, that if anyone is uncertain about the power of prayer and the unconditional love of God—experienced even in the worst of times—that it is time to reimagine one’s understanding of prayer and one’s image of God. This is a most challenging spiritual work. It requires a life-time of longing and effort (as long as you have on this earth will be enough time). Anywhere, anytime, anyway, any book, movie or lesson on spirituality can be a sufficient beginning.
